What is the difference between a Chiropodist and a Podiatrist?

It can be quite confusing as both Chiropodists and Podiatrists are terms used to describe the registered professionals specialising in foot health. The term Podiatrist was adopted in the UK in 1993 as an internationally recognised name for a foot specialist.  The scope of practice has also vastly expanded since to become a Podiatrist now, you have to enrol for a Podiatric degree at university where you complete 1000hrs of practice along with full time theory modules to become a member of the Royal College of Podiatry.

There are 14 schools of podiatry in the UK.  Previously, Chiropodists will have achieved a diploma, however this has now been replaced with the BSc (Hons) programmes.

The modules include anatomy, physiology, biochemistry, pharmacology, basis of medicine, biomechanics, medical physics as well as the theory of podiatry and specific foot conditions.  Podiatrists now form part of a multi-disciplinary team within orthopaedic, vascular, diabetic, musculo-skeletal and peadiatric departments.

Finally, Podiatrists are registered by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC).  They are duty bound to practice evidence-based medicine. Therefore, you can be assured you are in safe hands.  All professionals are to ensure they continue updating their professional development attending courses to keep their knowledge up to date and following guidelines set by the governing bodies.
